From the many unknown reasons for Black women developing fibroids, reproductive health concerns, women having hysterectomies at an early age, Black maternal health is an imperative topic.
As a Black woman who experienced fibroids, cysts, and infertility, I was able to learn intricate parts of my body. Partnering with my PCP (Primary Care Physician), getting a new OB/GYN, and establishing care at a fertility clinic, was truly next level.
Having irregular periods is not normal. Having pain during sex is not normal. Having excruciating cramps during your menstrual cycle is not normal. If you’re experiencing these problems, and your OB/GYN is not listening to you, or asking pertinent questions, find another doctor. Get another opinion. Your body matters.
Statistically, Black women are more than likely to not survive childbirth. For these reasons, many Black women have been seeking sources such as Doulas and holistic approaches to their pregnancy and childbirth.
This year, the theme for Black Maternal Health is, “Our Bodies still Belong to Us. Reproductive Justice Now.” I encourage you to make a list of concerns or questions you have about your bodies. I encourage you to consider care at a fertility clinic so you’re aware of how many eggs you have; what pregnancy may look like for you (if that is something you’re interested in). I also encourage you to ask your family questions. We all know in Black families, many issues were either unresolved, or simply not discussed because that was our norm.
After having fibroids in 2018, I learned many women in my family also had fibroids. Now that I have a daughter, I plan to fill her in on all maternal health issues so that she is aware. I pray she doesn’t experience what my family, some friends, and I have experienced. Either way, she will have the education behind her.
Make sure you tap into your local Black Maternal Health forums and conversations! It’s a beautiful thing to see us all come together to assure we are healthy.
You matter and so does your body.
Sprinkled with love.
