I can’t let #blackhistorymonth close out without a blog! It’s the last day of February, and most posts will fade away, but my history (#HERstory) remains.
If I can be honest, I never thought of myself as having a story to tell such as my ancestors, historical figures, and even our wonderful #Blackheroes today. If you think of #history, #change, and making a difference, you think of household names, and I’m not her. Then I thought to myself, I may not have broken a glass ceiling in the boardroom, or have been the first to do a life changing thing such as those in history, or attend every single march for a change, but I’m still a #blackgirl with a story.
I have a son and a daughter who will look to their father as their own hero, and look to me as a set standard of what it looks like to be a wife and a mother. I have endured fibroids, anxiety, depression, infertility, racism in college, and that alone is my story. No, it didn’t make headlines, but it will show my children and maybe those around me that being #resilient is in our DNA. Having the richness of resiliency, strength, courage, determination, bravery, and intelligence is all a part of who I am, and how I hope my children will see me. I also hope they see the softness in the midst of those strong traits.
I love hearing stories of my family where it shows how they overcame such triumphs. It shows me that I can do it to. It took me a long time to see that I have a story that may be small to others, but mighty for my children need to hear.
I hope my children love their skin, hair, strengths and abilities that is embedded in their souls. If you feel as if you haven’t made history, know that your survival in 2024 is historical. There are so many women around me who I consider heroic, and I hope to have an eighth of what these women have/had.
•My ancestors
•My husband
•My mother
•My sister
•My aunts
•My uncles
•My cousins
•The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and every organization of the Divine Nine
•My friends
•My teachers who taught me what wasn’t in books
Everyone named above has been a part of me knowing, learning, and growing my HERstory and being a part of what Black History is all about!
Happy Black History Month. Happy Black History 365
Sprinkled with love,
Brittany/B. Mommy Sprinkles
